Volunteer-Led Support for Families with Young Children Through Challenging Times

Who It’s For: Families with at least one child under five years old who are going through a difficult time. Support is available to any parent or carer — regardless of background — who is experiencing challenges such as postnatal depression, loneliness and isolation, bereavement, domestic abuse, disability, ill health, financial difficulties, or the pressures of multiple births.

What They Offer: Home-Start is a national network of local schemes across around 300 communities in the UK, each delivering trained volunteer support directly into families’ homes. Volunteers — who are usually parents themselves — visit families weekly to provide compassionate, non-judgemental, practical and emotional support. The model is built on friendship and trust, helping parents regain confidence and resilience during some of the hardest chapters of early family life. Support is always free and completely confidential.

Support Includes:

  • Weekly home visits from a trained volunteer — one-to-one, friendly and consistent
  • Emotional support for parents struggling with isolation, anxiety, low mood or postnatal depression
  • Practical help and guidance tailored to what each family actually needs
  • Parenting programmes and group support at some local schemes
  • Domestic abuse support programmes including play therapy groups for children (at some schemes)
  • Financial guidance and workshops at some local children’s centres
  • Support for forces families in Germany and Cyprus
  • Referrals accepted from health visitors, GPs and other professionals

Referral / Access: Self-referral or professional referral. Families can contact their local Home-Start directly — use the scheme finder on the website to locate the nearest service. Professionals including health visitors and doctors can also refer families. Support availability may vary slightly by local scheme.

Why This Matters: The early years of parenting can be some of the most isolating and overwhelming of a person’s life — and that’s true for families from every background. Home-Start’s volunteers don’t judge, don’t lecture and don’t tell you what to do. They simply show up, week after week, to support you in whatever way you need. For many families, that consistent, warm presence makes all the difference.
